Este lago fue creado por la extracción de arena y arcilla en el pasado. La arcilla se procesaba en ladrillos en la fábrica de ladrillos adyacente de Koornwaard. De esta manera, el lago se profundizó hasta nada menos que 22 a 24 metros. En 2014 y 2015, la Junta de Agua de Rivierenland dragó el Linge entre Geldermalsen y Gorinchem para hacer que el río fuera nuevamente más navegable. La draga se utilizó en la remodelación de este lago, que ahora pertenece a staatsbosbeheer. Debido a que el fondo ahora varía mucho más en altura, el agua se vuelve adecuada nuevamente para albergar una mayor variedad de peces. El área es parte de la Estructura Ecológica Principal.
