The Bargerveen is a vast peat bog reserve (2,028 ha) southeast of Emmen. It is the last remnant of the Bourtangerveen, which is almost entirely reclaimed.
The Forestry Commission tries to retain as much water as possible in the Bargerveen by means of development measures (including the construction of dams). Raised bogs depend on rainwater. If the discharge is accelerated, the peat dries out and the special communities disappear. By retaining the water, peat formation can continue unimpeded and the most valuable parts are preserved. The additional management consists of grazing with a flock of sheep, sowing, mowing and removal of storage.
The Bargerveen has been designated as a geological monument, it is an area with special geological (geological, geomorphological, soil) values.
