The Hondsrug is the eastern boundary of the Drents Plateau. The ridge has a length of 70 kilometers and extends from Groningen to Emmen. The Hondsrug is not a ridge that you can see from afar. It is low, often only about 10 meters higher than the surroundings.
Today, the Hondsrug is considered a so-called megaflute. Megaflutes were formed in the penultimate ice age (Saalien) because an ice stream formed in the land ice. At the bottom of the ice stream, low, parallel mounds can form, made of soil material over which the ice stream passes. Once the ice has receded, the ridges, or megaflutes, become visible as giant stripes in the landscape.
The Hondsrug area is the first UNESCO Global Geopark in the Netherlands (2013). Geoparks are areas where geological heritage and landscapes of international value are managed in an integral way. The geological history, the cultural history, the contemporary culture and nature together determine the identity of the area.
