The rolling landscape of Texel was formed in the penultimate ice age (Saalien). Due to the pressure of the land ice, boulder clay humps have been created, including along the Texel-Wieringen-Gaasterland line. Boulder clay is a mix of clay and stones formed under the ice sheet (ground moraine). The highest point of Wieringen is 12 meters above sea level at Westerland.
In the last ice age (Weichselien) there was no land ice in the Netherlands, but there was a subarctic climate so that there was little or no plant growth. Icy sandstorms covered the boulder loam with a thick layer of cover sand. Only a few 'boulder clay heads' still protrude above the deck sand.
The Hoge Berg is the highest boulder hump on Texel (15.3 m +NAP). The area with rolling grassland, garden walls and sheep pens is a unique cultural-historical landscape.
