In 1776 and 1825 there were two major floods that caused great destruction in Blankenham. The so-called gully holes or wheels bear witness to this.
To warn of future disasters, a number of high-water cannons were placed between Vollenhove and Kuinre. Members of the dike guard had to warn the population in the event of imminent high water. At high tide they fired one shot. With two shots, it was known that the water was up to the top of the dike. When three shots were fired, they knew that the dike had been breached, so they had to get out.
The powder house served as a powder storage place for the cannon on the dike. It is a brick building covered with red roof tiles. The powder house has a special building construction. The gable roof is loose and there are large round holes in the walls. An explosion lifted the roof and caused the air to escape from the holes. This prevented the whole house from being blown up.
