The water tower De Meije was built in 1931-1932. In total, 356 piles form the foundation of the tower. The tower is 57.65 meters high. The water reservoir at the top of the tower has a capacity of 450 m3. Due to its shape, the tower has long been known as 'Piet Potlood'.
The small windows in the sleek facade and a striking cornice provide detailing in this otherwise typical example of New Objectivity architecture. The rational architecture of New Building is characterized, among other things, by straight lines and geometric and abstract forms. The architects of New Building advocated for functional and prefabricated construction using steel and concrete structures. The water tower De Meije is one of the first towers in the Netherlands built using the 'slip form' system.
Piet Potlood held on for a long time and was still in use for water storage until recently. The other water towers in the Groene Hart have been replaced over the years by pumping stations.
The water tower has officially been decommissioned after nearly ninety years of faithful service. What the future holds for Piet Potlood is still unknown. Demolition will not happen, as the water tower has been a national monument since 2001.
