The centre of Hilvarenbeek is formed by the Vrijthof. A vrijthof is an enclosed place, a courtyard of the church or an enclosed courtyard (in medieval Dutch 'vrithof'). The Vrijthof of Hilvarenbeek and the streets leading to it are surrounded by special buildings, including the Sint-Petrus'-Bandenkerk, a Gothic church from the 14th and 15th centuries.
There are also two lime trees on the Vrijthof. The Commandment lime tree is a lime tree that was planted in 1676 or shortly before and has the shape of a badger linde. The tree got its name because the Lord of Hilvarenbeek announced his ordinances below. Traditionally, a younger lime tree was also planted on the Vrijthof, which was to replace the old tree in due course. The current young lime tree was planted in 1923.
