Until about 1800, the area that is now called Nieuw-Schoonebeek consisted mainly of extensive, inaccessible peat bogs with swamps. Along the Schoonebeker Diep were the ox stables of the Schoonebeker farmers. The shepherds spent the summers there in solitude with their animals. At that time, they grazed the greenlands along the Diep with their young cattle. In the winter they lived in their home village, usually Schoonebeek. There was therefore no question of permanent residence.
In the first quarter of the 19th century, young farmers, mostly from the Emsland, had their eye on the peat bogs owned by Schoonebeker farmers. They bought, often together with a few others, an ox barn with the extensive peat lands that went with it and settled there. With the cultivation of buckwheat and, to a lesser extent, potatoes, they tried to build a living on these peat bogs.
