The Amsterdamse Bos is located almost entirely within the municipality of Amstelveen. The part south of the A9 motorway was part of the municipality of Aalsmeer until 2002, but the municipal boundary between Amstelveen and Aalsmeer has since been at the Bosrandweg. The municipality of Amsterdam is the owner and manager of the forest.
The inspiration for the Amsterdamse Bos was Jac. P. Thijsse. As early as 1900, he expressed concern about the greenery around the city. In his work, he indicated that the area south of the Nieuwe Meer was very suitable for the establishment of a forest.
