Traditionally, the Oosterkerk has been the church of skippers and fishermen. Originally, there was a wooden chapel on the site of the Oosterkerk, which was built around 1453. In 1483, this chapel, dedicated to Saint Anthony, was demolished to be rebuilt in stone. The last renovations were completed in 1523, making the Oosterkerk the second oldest church in Hoorn.
However, the coat of arms on the church shows a different year, namely 1616. The cause of this is a natural disaster that occurred in 1603: a tremendous storm caused the facade to collapse with a thunderous noise. Part of the church was unharmed, but the damage was significant. The rebuilding of the skipper's church soon began, which was completed in 1616.
The Oosterkerk is now an active cultural center that hosts all kinds of activities: from chamber music to organ concerts, from meetings to receptions and from weddings to memorial services.
