The building was originally designed as a hall church, and in 1926 it was extended with a transept. The design is by the architect Lammert Reitsma. Since the merger between Reformed and Seceders, the church has been named Good Shepherd Church.
Ulrum was the place where Hendrik de Cock began the Secession in 1834. The Reformed church in Ulrum was built shortly after the gathering in 1892 of Secession and Doleantie.
