The Van Leydenhof is a nature reserve near Kijkduin on the southern side of The Hague. It is managed by the South Holland Landscape, which also manages the West Dunes on Goeree and Langeveld at Langevelderslag.
After the last ice age, the melting ice temporarily raised the sea level. About 3000 years ago, the stable level returned, and the Dutch coast began to grow again. Young dunes formed. Between the young and old dunes, a layer of peat developed, which is why The Hague is partly on sand ridges and partly on peat soil.
