In the course of the nineteenth century, road traffic and transportation increased steadily, leading to a need for paved roads. The paving of roads and their management and maintenance were almost always associated with the collection of tolls. The first toll road in Steenwijk, located in the territory of the municipality of Steenwijkerwold and owned, managed, and maintained by the municipalities of Steenwijk, was the Gasthuisdijk.
