Hardenbroek is mentioned for the first time in 1382. In 1536 the first list of knight's manors appeared. Hardenbroek is included in this. The house was then inhabited by Joost van Hardenbroek. Pieter van Hardenbroek died in 1662, having no sons. He bequeathed the house to his nephew Hendrik Gijsbert van Hardenbroek. He sold it in 1684. In 1733 Willem Kerckrinck rented the house. He later bought it and spent a lot of money on a thorough renovation. When his widow remarried, Hardenbroek was put up for public auction. The buyer was Jan Adolf van Hardenbroek, lord of Hardenbroek, Lockhorst, Bergestein, 's-Heeraartsberg, Bergambacht and Ammerstol. So the house came back to the Van Hardenbroek family. Between 1789 and 1793 a new rear façade was erected, possibly designed by the Amsterdam architect Jacob Otten Husly.
