The Green Carpet is a wide avenue in Maastricht located on top of the Willem-Alexander Tunnel, with a 6-meter wide cycling and walking path in the middle and plenty of greenery on both sides.
It was opened on March 29, 2018, by King Willem-Alexander and has a total length of 3.6 km.
The unique two-layer car tunnel underneath was opened earlier, precisely on schedule and within budget, on the night of December 15 to 16, 2016, by the then Minister of Infrastructure and the Environment, Melanie Schultz van Haegen.
Both the Green Carpet and the Willem-Alexander Tunnel replaced the busy A2 motorway that had previously run through the city (“with the only traffic lights between Amsterdam and Milan”) and created a significant barrier between the adjacent neighborhoods.
Now, the Green Carpet also forms a beautiful connection between the estate area “Buitengoed Geul en Maas” in the north, three parks (Lourdespark, Vrijheidspark, and Oranjepark) in the middle, and the Randwijck neighborhood in the south.
