The Elperstroom is a stream in Drenthe. The stream originates at Schoonloo and flows through the forest east of Elp to the Oranjekanaal. The water is passed under the canal and turns into the Westerborkerstroom on the other side.
The stream valley was designated a Natura 2000 site in 2010. To prevent the stream and the surrounding stream valley from drying out, the groundwater level is gradually raised. Over time, many ditches and ditches have been dug in the area, which ensured rapid drainage of the water. By damping these ditches and ditches, an attempt is made to retain the water in the area longer. The very rare butterfly species, the silver moon, depends on the marsh violet, which thrives in a watery environment. The grey shrike, which is relatively rare in the Netherlands, also has a breeding area here.
