The Gasterse Dunes consist of a rolling heath landscape. Large drifting dunes and picturesque ponds largely define the appearance of the terrain. Once, the ponds in the area were part of the course of the stream De Drentsche Aa. That is why the ponds are aligned with each other. In long-forgotten times, the course was partially filled in with sand, leaving two large ponds. The ponds are now known as the Front and Back peat bogs.
The terrain is located north of Gasteren and is bisected by a sand road with a cycle path between Gasteren and Schipborg. The grazed part of the terrain is not accessible to dogs. A marked walking route has been laid out through the area. The area is suitable for a long walk to enjoy the surrounding Stream Valley landscape.
The terrain is not only beautiful nature, but there are also ancient signs of habitation. Locally, medieval cart tracks are recognizable as deep grooves. The burial mound D10 is located within the terrain. An approximately 3000-year-old burial mound is also part of the terrain.
