In 1532, a heavy fortress tower was built at the entrance to the Old Port, which also formed the entrance gate for those who wanted to enter the city from the 'Houten Hoofd', a jetty for seagoing ships built in 1464. The Hoofdtoren is a striking structure at the southernmost point of the 16th century Hoorn.
The semicircular tower has a straight brick facade in late Gothic style on the city side. On the sea side, the tower has a round white-yellow natural stone wall of 1.5 meters thick. From the beginning of the 17th century, its function as a defensive tower was no longer necessary and the Main Tower was put into use by various civil institutions.
