Station Terneuzen was from April 1, 1869, to October 7, 1951, a station at the terminus of both railway lines 54 and 55. The first railway line has now largely been dismantled, and the other is only used for freight transport by the companies along the Ghent-Terneuzen Canal. Zealandic Flanders would never have become the Zealandic Flanders of today without rail and local railways. The railway - the lines Mechelen - Terneuzen, Ghent - Terneuzen, the steam tram Breskens - Maldegem, and the Zeelandic-Flemish Tramway Company - ensured that the area was opened up.
