Medemblik probably takes its name from the peat river Middenleek (Medemalaca). The first inhabitants settled around 700 at the end of a creek ridge on the south bank of the Middenleek. The Oude Haven was originally part of the river.
In 1599 the Nieuwe Haven (now Oosterhaven) was dug. Within thirty fat years, the sites along the Oosterhaven were fully built up and soon the initiative was taken to expand the port facilities again. The Westerhaven and the Eilandshaven (now Pekelharinghaven) were dug in 1631.
A completely new city wall including wide and deep canals was constructed. The Koningin Emmapark and the Parksingel are remnants of the old city wall and city canal.
Despite all measures, however, stagnation and decay could not be escaped and Medemblik was eventually outflanked by Enkhuizen, Hoorn and Amsterdam.
