The bridge is one of the few remaining remnants of Goes' history as a 'fortified city': a city that was built on strategically with so-called fortifications. This was a system of ramparts, gates, bastions and more, whose purpose was to protect the population of the city from the enemies from outside.
In 1663, the wooden bridge at the Ganzepoort was replaced by a stone bridge, the Stone Bridge.
