This is the oldest water retention basin in Enschede (1969). When it rains very heavily, the wastewater treatment plant Enschede West cannot process all the water. The sewage is then diverted to this retention basin. This basin temporarily holds five million liters of dirty water until there is 'room again' at the treatment plant. The dirt settles at the bottom (hence the name retention basin). After the rain, it is washed away again, diverted to the water treatment plant, and purified there. The basin has an open top so you can see how it works. On the wall, there is a water poem by city poet Jos Eertink.
