During the reclamation of the Wieringermeer (1930), two pumping stations were used: an electric pumping station (Lely pumping station near Medemblik) and a diesel pumping station (Leemans pumping station near Den Oever).
Pumping station Lely is currently kept 'dormant', it only comes into action when pumping station Leemans is out of operation or when flooding is imminent.
One of the largest wind turbines in the Netherlands is located in the Wieringermeer near Medemblik, which generates enough electricity for 5,400 households. In May 2012, this almost 200 m high wind turbine called 'De Ambtenaar' started supplying electricity to the public electricity grid.
