At the roundabout where the Almersdorperweg and the Westfriese Omringdijk intersect, Almersdorp must have been located in the Middle Ages. After the devastating St. Clement's flood in 1334, part of Almersdorp vanished into the waves. The village has gradually moved further south due to flooding, eventually settling in its last location in the sixteenth century. Ultimately, the village has disappeared.
At the site where the center of Almersdorp presumably once stood, there is now a monument as a reminder of the vanished Almersdorp.
The artwork, in the shape of a sleek metal church, was designed by visual artist Thea van Lier from Hoorn.
