The Suikerplein owes its name to Suikerfabriek West, which closed in 1964 but was only demolished in the 1980s.
The aerial photograph from the 1940s gives a wonderful overview of the surroundings. At the top left you see the timber ports, at the top right above the grain silo on the IJ, at the bottom right the Magdalena church, on the railway, demolished in 1967, and in the middle the sugar factory.
