The Linneuskade is actually the dike around the Watergraafsmeer. This lake was drained in 1629. If you walk south from the dike, you clearly descend a few meters. Until 1921, Watergraafsmeer was an independent municipality. For centuries, the polder was empty except for the occasional farm and a villa. From 1900 onwards, Watergraafsmeer was further developed for housing. You can clearly read the growth rings here: first the Art Nouveau in the Linneuspark neighborhood, then the Amsterdam School houses, and finally the functionalist housing from the 1950s.
