Kattenburg

Description

The Kattenburgerstraat was a narrow street until 1960, with a Jordaan-like working-class neighborhood on the east side. Once, in the eighteenth century, there were social types living here who, for unclear reasons, were on the side of the stadtholder of Orange. In 1787, after the suppression of the Patriotic Revolution by the Prussians, they held a 'day of the axe,' during which the city regents had to pay the price.

In the 1960s, the old neighborhood was demolished, and it took at least ten years to carry out new construction. It was the time of urban planning experiments with the separation of functions: living, working, and transport were taken apart. The Kattenburgerstraat became a broad traffic collection street while the inner area became car-free. Cars were tucked away in semi-submerged garages; the inner area is almost car-free. There are no shops or offices. People live here. They usually do so elevated above the basement units, in maisonettes, spacious by Amsterdam standards. The whole was designed by Dick Apon, who, with his partners from the ABBT agency, is also responsible for the layout of Almere Haven.
