The name comes from the Zeelandic-Flemish word marolles which means coots and possibly, given the white blaze on the otherwise black plumage, reminiscent of nuns. Marollenput is the place where, after the inundation of 1583, several sea channels came together. From the north came the Black Hole, from the east the Nieuwerhavense Gat, while the southwest was connected to the Zwin via the Coxysche Gat. This confluence led to silting, which caused silting and soon these sea holes were no longer suitable for shipping.
