The oldest surviving cast iron lighthouse in the Netherlands was designed by Quirinus Harder and was built in 1867. The lighthouse originally stood on top of the seawall. When the dike was raised to delta height in the seventies of the twentieth century, it was placed on the sea side of the dike. On 29 May 2015, the lighthouse was handed over by the Belgian government to the Breskens Lighthouse Foundation in a small ceremony. Since then, the tower has been open to the public. The light is also operational again, and is also on nautical charts.
