The driveway to the Liniebrug

In front of you you will see the Liniebrug, a bicycle and walking bridge that opened in 2018. With the construction, the connection between the two banks of the Amsterdam-Rhine Canal was restored after more than 50 years.

Before the canal was dug in 1892, the Hollandse Kade, from Nigtevecht to the Gein, ran a little further north. This quay was improved at the end of the 17th century by the wealthy Amsterdammer Jeronimus Velters into a real roadway and has since been called Velterslaan. This way he could get faster from his country estate on the Vecht to his house on the Gein.

Due to the construction of the canal, this road was intersected. On the other side of the canal the road is still called Velterslaan, the part on the Nigtevecht side has since been called Korte Velterslaan. You pass it over 150 meters.

The two cut-off parts of the avenue were connected by the swing bridge that you see in this photo from ca. 1920. This was replaced in 1952 by a ferry on a rail (see the Past and Present sign on the other side of the Line Bridge). When it was lifted in 1967, there was no direct crossing over the canal at Nigtevecht. Fortunately, that has now changed!

Tip! If you cross the bridge and turn left twice, you will pass Fort Nigtevecht, part of the New Dutch Water Line (since 2021 Unesco World Heritage) and the Defence Line of Amsterdam.

Route for the Past and Now walk through the village of Nigtevecht: Continue on the road and turn right across the drawbridge.
