In 1629 the water in the Gement was as high as three meters. Convoys of wagons and carts had to be given a passable path. For this purpose, earth was raised, which was held together with poles with branches strung between them. The Dutch helped with this big job. When the Hollandsche Dijk was finished, the line around the city of 's-Hertogenbosch was completely round. Immediately after the siege of 's-Hertogenbosch, the States demolished the Hollandsche Dijk again. In this way, the water system was restored and the dike could not be used against them.
