From the wallen you have a beautiful view of the standerdmolen from 1818. Ever heard of windrecht? The very first owner of the mill, Bartolemeus de Vos, had to pay three guilders in ground rent per year for the use of the wind.
The mill is a corn and hulling mill. It is one of the oldest standerdmolens in the Netherlands and one of the four still standing in Zeeland. In addition, it is the only staakmolen in Zeeland with a hulling installation for barley. The Retranchementse mill has a sweep of 20.70 meters. The mill is operational and is still used on a voluntary basis to grind grain. There has been a mill at this location since 1643. The current mill was rebuilt in 1818 after it was blown over.
