The polder was diked in 1510 by Philip van Kleef and it was originally called Groot-Breskenspolder.
In 1517, the village of Breskens was founded in the southeast corner of this polder. When the Jong-Breskenspolder was also diked in 1527, the Groot-Breskenspolder was gradually renamed Oud-Breskenspolder. Its surface area is currently 567 ha.
From 2012, part of the polder will be turned into a nature and recreation area called Waterdunen. The polder is located at NAP +1.5 m and is therefore excavated with channels to a depth of NAP -2 m. The fresh agricultural polder , which is still relatively fresh to a great depth , will become a saltwater area . The soil will salinize further. From there , fresher groundwater will be displaced inland by saltier water to a certain extent.
