In 1778, the year of the reclamation of the Hoofdplaatpolder, the dike and the then harbor were located further north, actually in the Westerschelde. Several dike breaches caused the polder to lose a significant part of its area within 25 to 30 years. Hoofdplaat became a village behind the dike, closely connected to the harbor. The harbor itself was lost during the construction of the Westerschelde dike in the early 1970s. The breakwater and the pier "Tèntenolle" (the end of the nolle) serve as a reminder of it. The information boards tell about the Hoofdplaatpolder and the Westerschelde. Through the binoculars, you can sometimes see seals on the "Plate" (large sandbank).
