Prosperity increased in Hoorn in the 17th century. As a result, new residents from outside came to the city and there was significant population growth. This had many consequences. This is how the desire arose to establish a new institution for insolvent lunatics. In 1617 the new accommodation was completed on the foundations of the former Kruisheren monastery. The new building also housed an old men's house and a reformatory or workhouse for beggars.
The complex included a chapel or church, wings with various homes, a kitchen and a dining room. The wings enclosed two courtyards where the gardens and bleachers were.
Nowadays, Sint Pietershof is a residential complex for seniors with 45 modern-adapted homes.
