The construction of the Sint Jansgasthuis in 1563 arose from the need to care for the sick and elderly. Over the centuries, the guest house received less and less support from the government and the complex fell into increasing disrepair due to the high costs. In 1841, the task of the Sint Jansgasthuis was abolished and the residents had to move. The Sint Jansgasthuis subsequently had various functions. Because the Sint Jansgasthuis also served for some time as a warehouse for butter and cheese, it is popularly called De Boterhal. Today, the Boterhal functions as an exhibition space.
