The history of the regional government of Westfriesland and the North Holland Noorderkwartier has left us two important buildings: the Statencollege (the meeting building on the Rode Steen) and the Statenlogement (the guest accommodation on the corner of Nieuwstraat-Nieuwsteeg).
After the victory over the Spanish fleet at the Hoornse Hop in 1573, the Spanish government lost its authority in the regions above the IJ and the way was open for the establishment of its own regional government within the Dutch State Association. The Board of Committed Councils of the Noorderkwartier and Westfriesland was composed of representatives of the seven cities within this area, namely Alkmaar, Medemblik, Enkhuizen, Hoorn, Monnickendam, Edam and Purmerend. Hoorn was designated as the seat of the board meetings.
After several locations in the city had served as residences and accommodation for the Committed, the current Statenlodging became the new accommodation for them after 1613 until the institution of the French period in 1796. It then served as the town hall until 1977. Nowadays, weddings are performed there and official receptions of the municipal council take place.
