Just like the opposite Appelhaven, the Bierkade is located on the oldest dug harbor (1420) in Hoorn. Quays such as those of the Appelhaven and the Bierkade were built with the excavated soil. The Bierkade is located on the artificial island of Venidse. The island was created in 1558, when the passage via the Korenmarkt to the Appelhaven was dug. The Bierkade is connected to the other streets of Hoorn by means of the Appelbrug and the Engeltjesbrug.
There are several old warehouses on the Bierkade and at number 10 there is a small but special house from the 17th century. What is special about this building is the original wooden facade and the two-part wooden rain pipe that runs along the facade. In the past, this was used to collect rainwater in the cistern that is still present in the house.
