The Reformed Church of Vlijmen, in the municipality of Heusden, islocated near the peasant fortress established for the Line of 1629. The nationally influential Protestant theologian and intellectual Gisbertus Voetius began his pastoral career in this church in 1611. He combined this with the pastoral position in Engelen. Voetius was born in Heusden in 1589 into a Protestant and pro-Oranje family. In 1617, he became the pastor of Heusden. Two decades later, he was co-founder of Utrecht University. In 1629, Voetius was a field preacher with the troops of Count Willem van Nassau-Siegen, Governor of Heusden, during the siege of 's-Hertogenbosch. After the city was captured, he played an important role in the surrender and the Reformation of 's-Hertogenbosch.
