The stately building of the Nieuwe Doelen is located in the Achterstraat. It housed the two militias of Hoorn, the Saint George's Shooting Guild (founded about 1440) and the Saint Sebastian's Shooting Guild (founded about 1500). Both militias were responsible for public order in the city, were active in fires and other disasters and, if necessary, in the defense of the city. Behind the building was the target field (the currrent Doelenplein), where the shooters could practice and hold parties.
In 1615, the goal building from 1564 was renovated. A new and rich facade was built on Achterstraat, including a gate containing the image of the martyrdom of Saint Sebastian. In the 18th century, the militia gradually lost its original function.

Above the entrance door on the back street is a group of statues with Saint Sebastian in the middle and on either side a soldier shooting at the saint with a bow and arrow.
