OOST-INDISCH HUIS

Description

Long before the Golden Age, Hoorn was an important trading city. The inhabitants of the city were active in herring fishing, the Baltic Sea trade and trade with France and Portugal. From the 16th and 17th centuries, Hoorn became indispensable as a port for international trade, shipping and shipbuilding. It is therefore not surprising that the VOC chose Hoorn as the home base for one of its departments.
The East India House (Muntstraat number 4) was purchased in 1676 by the Dutch East India Company (VOC). From then on, this was where the daily management of the Hoorn trading company was located. This office acted under the central government of the VOC, the Heren XVII. Hoorn itself equipped ships for trade in the Indies and sent representatives to the central government.
In the triangular pediment on the facade, four angels hold the monogram of the Hoornse VOC.
