A glimpse into the past of Castle Nijenborgh and Weert
The construction of Castle Nijenborgh began in 1455 on the orders of Jacob I van Horne, lord of Weert. The castle replaced the old Aldenborgh and served as the administrative center of the County of Horne. The fortress consisted of an imposing main keep with square towers and a moat, as well as a bailey with various service buildings.
