The Papenpad is an ancient path that Catholic worshippers (referred to as Paap) from Bennekom and possibly from the surrounding area used on their way to Renkum. Catholic church services were held at Grunsfoort Castle in the Renkum valley. You can still find an information board on Beukenlaan. After Sandrina van Stepraedt, a fervent Catholic, became a widow following the death of her Protestant husband, church services began on the castle grounds. There was even a priest living at the castle who conducted the services. In 1726, the owner of the castle passed away, leaving behind enormous debts, and the castle had to be sold. This marked the end of Grunsfoort as the center of the Catholics in the area, but the Papenpad retained its name.
