Le Papenpad est un chemin ancien que les fidèles catholiques (appelés Paap) de Bennekom et peut-être aussi de la région située derrière celui-ci empruntaient en direction de Renkum. En effet, des services religieux catholiques étaient célébrés au château de Grunsfoort dans la vallée de la rivière de Renkum. À l'avenue des Hêtres, vous trouverez encore un panneau d'information. Après que Sandrina van Stepraedt, fervente catholique, soit devenue veuve suite au décès de son mari protestant, des services religieux ont commencé sur le terrain du château. Un prêtre résidait même au château, qui s'occupait des célébrations. En 1726, le propriétaire du château est décédé en laissant d'énormes dettes, et le château a dû être vendu. C'était la fin de Grunsfoort en tant que centre des catholiques de la région, mais le Papenpad a conservé son nom.
