The yew is an evergreen shrub with red berries in the autumn. All parts of the yew contain the toxic substance taxine, with the exception of the seed arils (false berries). Those berries (only the flesh!) are even edible and have a sweet taste. The flesh is actually the seed coat. The pit in the berry, or the seed, is extremely toxic to humans but very nutritious for birds (especially blackbirds).
