De Weijerkens is a former agricultural enclave of approximately 35 hectares near the Weebosch in the municipality of Bergeijk. The area is managed by Staatsbosbeheer and is part of the Natura 2000 network in the Netherlands (NNN). De Weijerkens forms the connection between Cartierheide and Stevensbergen for among others the smooth snake and the brown oak butterfly. Since 2010, Staatsbosbeheer has managed the area as herb-rich grassland. In 2014, the seriously endangered field pearl-bordered fritillary was discovered in this area. Since then, measures have been implemented to guarantee a habitat for this very rare species. The measures benefit the biodiversity of dry nutrient-poor soils (calcareous grasslands). For the implementation of the measures, Staatsbosbeheer collaborates with De Vlinderstichting.
Creation of temporary fields
The temporary fields are created in rotation throughout the area. By creating temporary fields, a food source is generated for, for example, migratory birds. The fields are cultivated once every six years with a crop. Due to the low sowing density and the labor involved with the small plots, harvesting is not economically viable. The crop remains standing as food for birds in winter. Additionally, the standing crop increases organic matter, which benefits the soil. To keep the grassland diverse, parts of it are grazed by a flock of sheep every autumn.
Hedges
There are hedges in several places on the Weijerkens. These are being expanded to create even more gradual transitions, structure, and microclimate. A new hedge is also being created. The top and branch wood that becomes available when the hedges are cut back will be used for this.
Creation of ponds
Ponds are important not just for amphibians but also for dragonflies, damselflies, and other species. Additionally, there is evidence that the smooth snake makes good use of such ponds and that frogs and toads are an important part of its diet.
Shrub planting
Margins and clusters of shrubs are planted to restore the small-scale character of the former agricultural landscape. Attention is paid to a dispersed supply of nectar throughout the season. Furthermore, the growing conditions, fruits, and origins of the species are examined.
