’t Heechsan (Hoogzand) is the oldest part of the village of Eastermar and is located north of the village. The first mention of the place dates back to 1422, when it is referred to as Aestermer. This hamlet is also known as Hoogzand-Oostermeer. Originally, it was the village center of Eastermar. It is situated at the end of a moraine, an area where material left behind by a moving glacier has gathered. The ground here is three meters higher than the Bergumermeer.
The old church of Eastermar was built in Hoogzand and was made of brick, the so-called monastery bricks, which indicates its age. The bells hung in a simple bell house.
In the second half of the 19th century, the ship of the church was demolished, but the tower, which was overgrown with ivy, was preserved. The replacement church was built a few hundred meters further south in Hoogzand.
