The Mayor of Amsterdam looks out from his office onto the Zwanenburgwal. Both the painter Rembrandt lived here (on the corner of Jodenbreestraat) as well as painter Salomon Meijer, and Karel Appel. In his youth, he had a studio at number 42, where he sheltered Jewish boys during the war.
The Zwanenburgwal was located in the middle of the Jewish neighborhood. At the corner with the Amstel, the monument for the Jewish resistance can be seen.
Other notable sons of this dock include architect Michiel de Klerk and communist leader Paul de Groot.
