In 1856, it was banned in Amsterdam to relieve yourself on the street. To prevent the dark alleys and secluded spots from being further turned into toilets, the city installed 250 cast-iron toilets that you can still see in some places like near the station, Amstelveld, the Prinsengracht, and the Sarphatipark.
These cast-iron urinals are referred to as "curls" due to their shape, and also as "secrets." The latter word has grown into a derogatory term.
