Euregio cycling route no. 51 History route

The history of this region is viewed in a bird's-eye view. The starting point at the Memorial Chapel is also the former entrance to the state mine Wilhelmina. The route then goes through the village of the former mining village Terwinselen to the Botanical Garden, which was also established by the state mine.

The route then passes by old farms and along the GaiaZoo park over the old stone road where the tram once ran and past an old gentleman's farm in the Bril. These 2 tunnels under the Miljoenenlijntje (railway connection whose construction once cost millions of guilders) and along the former dump (now a beautiful city park) towards the city center of Kerkrade.

After the center, we drive along the old Rolduckerweg to the abbey with the same name, offering a beautiful view over our neighboring country where the old stone heaps can still be seen.

The tour continues to the monumental white houses in the Hopel before returning through the nature reserve of Strijthagen with the ponds and the castle to the back of Mondo Verde and the old farm, now restaurant Overste Hof. Lastly, we see the high stairs offering a stunning view over a large part of Limburg, as well as Belgium and Germany. On this former stone heap, skiing now takes place in both summer and winter.
